More Chandler district hoops shakeups
In addition to John Burns leaving Basha after one season, both Chandler and Perry high schools are dealing with boys and girls basketball coaching turnover.
Mike Ellsworth resigned at Chandler after nine seasons as boys basketball coach at the school, where he’ll continue teaching. Ellsworth was 95-154 overall (.381) in those nine season, with the Wolves’ best season coming in 2008-2009 (19-12). He also led the memorable upset of his No. 16-seeded Wolves over No. 1 Highland in overtime in the first round of the 2008 state tournament.
Ellsworth coached at Phoenix Trevor Browne for 14 years before moving to Chandler in 2004.
Further south and east in the Chandler district, Perry coach Richard Trujillo has resigned after five seasons as the girls hoops coach, according to athletic director Jennifer Burks.
Trujillo’s teams were 72-67 in his tenure. Perry made the playoffs from 2009 through 2011, and reached the quarterfinals twice (once in the old 4A Division II and another as a 5A-II school) during that period.
The last two seasons were a struggle for Perry (18-35 overall) while the Pumas competed in Division I.
