Desert Mountain baseball off to fast start
The Desert Mountain baseball team may be off to the most impressive start among all Division I programs.
The Wolves are 4-0, which includes wins over No. 9 Gilbert and Division II No. 2 Sunrise Mountain.
Desert Mountain is one of only three teams in the division with four wins already, joined by St. Mary’s and Tolleson. It will play in the championship game of the Scottsdale Invitational Tournament on Saturday at noon, likely against Notre Dame.
Ben Rodriguez has led the way thus far, hitting .417 with three home runs, four RBIs and a 1.795 on-base-plus-slugging-percentage in his first 12 at-bats. Lucas Jacobi (1.483 OPS), Cody Erickson (1.132 OPS) and David Greer (1.062 OPS) are also hitting well.
Erickson and Greer have combined to throw 8 1/3 shutout innings and the team has an ERA of 2.50 in the earlygoing.
Desert Mountain was ranked No. 2 in the Tribune’s Division I preseason poll and seems to have the hitting and pitching depth to be a contender.
