Boys basketball coaching search updates
Tempe got the ball rolling by hiring Tom Saltzstein as its boys basketball coach last week. There are several other East Valley schools with boys hoops coaching openings. Here are a few updates:
* Chandler: Athletic director Dave Shapiro said the school is holding interviews today and tomorrow and expects to have a new coach in place by the end of the week. Mike Ellsworth resigned at the end of the year. The Wolves went 12-15 this season and return five of their six leading scorers, including Marco Morales (14.2 points per game) and Kameron Casey (11.0 points, 8.2 rebounds).
* Skyline: Athletic director Greg Schultz said the Coyotes are reviewing resumes and will interview later this week. A hire isn’t expected until after the school’s Spring Break. Skyline went 7-17 this season. Coach Mike Wirth resigned in early February. The Coyotes only had one senior on the varsity roster, but star sophomore Jordan Lee (12.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 3.0 steals) transferred to Mesquite after the season.
* Red Mountain: The Mountain Lions have cut the candidate list to 10, with interviews being held Friday and next Monday, athletic director Jim Gowdy said. Coach Greg Sessions was fired after the team went 17-11 this season and lost to Mountain Pointe in the first round of the Division I tournament. The team loses three of its top five scorers to graduation, including Northern Arizona-bound Travis Meeker (19.9 points, 4.7 rebounds).
