Mesa boys volleyball wins Chandler Wolf Howl Invitational
With some promising play at the end of last season, expectations had risen for the Mesa boys volleyball team heading into 2013.
They might be even higher after the Jackrabbits’ performance over the weekend.
Mesa defeated Boulder Creek 25-23, 18-25, 15-11 in the championship match to capture the prestigious Wolf Howl Invitational title. The tournament showcased some of the best teams in the state, including defending champion Gilbert and runner-up Brophy.
Mesa beat Desert Vista in the semifinals and Boulder Creek knocked off Brophy to set up the championship match. The Jackrabbits lost matches to Boulder Creek and Perry in pool play but finished strong for the title.
“All the hard work is paying off,” coach Anthony Millanes said. “It’s a great early-season accomplishment. We’ve got to keep pushing, though.”
Millanes was struck by the overall parity and improvement of several programs.
“(The state tournament) is going to be a dogfight,” he said. “Everybody’s gotten to the point of having three-to-four solid players.”
Millanes said Brophy junior Ryne Benson was named tournament Most Valuable Player, while Mesa’s J.T Hatch, Hamilton’s Saige Gonsalves and Mountain View’s Rock Shill were among the all-tournament selections.
