Brophy, Chaparral baseball finding momentum
Brophy and Chaparral have two of the premier baseball programs in Arizona, and last year’s success reflected that.
The teams met in the Division I championship game, with the Firebirds capturing the title on a walk-off home run from Player of the Year Dylan Cozens.
This season, though, did not start very well at all for either of them.
The Broncos lost early games to Gila Ridge and Ironwood, among others, and were 3-6 after a loss to top-ranked Sandra Day O’Connor on March 11. Chaparral was 4-6 following a loss to Tucson on the same day.
To put that in perspective, the Firebirds dropped only seven games (out of 35) in 2012.
Finally, though, over the past week and a half, both Brophy and Chaparral have started to find their way.
The Broncos have won four consecutive games to inch over .500 at 7-6. Two have come against No. 4 Mountain Pointe and another over Horizon.
Chaparral has captured five wins in its past six contests, highlighted by a come-from-behind 8-7 victory over No. 2 Desert Mountain on Tuesday.
Are these simply nice stretches for teams who are in transition years, or a sign of things to come the rest of the way? Time will tell.
