Fred Mann leaves Mountain Pointe for Perry volleyball

Posted by on March 28, 2013 – 10:53 am

Longtime and uber-successful Mountain Pointe boys volleyball coach Fred Mann is leaving the school to coach the Perry girls volleyball team this fall.

Mann, who’ll be a guidance counselor at Perry, also has a girls volleyball coaching background, but built the Pride’s boys program up from the ground into a powerhouse in the late 1990′s and 2000′s.

The Pride won eight boys state championships under Mann (1995, 1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2008 and 2009), and the girls won the 2001 championship when he coached both sports. Mountain Pointe’s boys/girls teams also combined for three state runner-up seasons.

The South African-born Mann served in the South African military and played professional beach volleyball in the early 1990′s before going into education.

It’ s a big loss for Mountain Pointe and a potentially big-time boon for the Pumas.
