Notre Dame hosts boys volleyball tournament

Posted by on April 11, 2013 – 12:54 pm

The Brophy Invitational gets a lot of the top schools and attention in boys volleyball, but it’s not the end-all of tournaments this weekend.

Normally, Red Mountain hosts the Lions Den tournament, but it was cancelled due to a lack of teams. But Notre Dame also hosts an invitational on Friday and Saturday.

The Notre Dame Invitational begins at 9 a.m. on Friday and runs through 8 p.m. (whew!). Matches on Saturday begin at 8 a.m. and run all day, with the championship at 3 p.m. at Notre Dame H.S. gym.

Participating schools:  Peoria Centennial, Campo Verde, Notre Dame, Glendale Ironwood, Coronado, Seton Catholic,  Williams Field, Basha, McClintock, Combs, St. Mary’s,  Scottsdale Christian, Peoria Sunrise Mountain, Tucson Sahuaro and Glendale Raymond S. Kellis.

Listen up volleyball fans! The Williams Field HS Black Hawks Men’s Volleyball Team took first place in the Notre Dame Volleyball Invitational this past weekend, avenging last year’s finals loss to Sahuaro. The Dudes o’ Volleyball did not drop a set the entire tournament. After coming out as the top team of their pool on Friday, defeating Sahuaro, Kellis, and Sunrise Mountain, the guys were all business against Centennial on Saturday. The Black Hawks, then, faced off against Sahuaro once again, this time, for the championship! Both sets were tight going down to the wire. Williams Field prevailed with tough defense and stellar offensive production to grab the first set 26-24. In the second set, WF needed to rally back from a 16-18 deficit, but did so convincingly to win 25-22. Andrew Krueger sealed the victory with a monster block. Key championship match contributors were Trevor Espinoza with 25 assists with Tyler Wilson leading all attackers with 11 kills and 2 aces. Senior leaders, Spencer Newcomb, Ryan Asistin, and Torien Bendel helped keep the pressure on Sahuaro with tough serving and defense. Junior sensations Trey Williams, Hayden Phillips, Ian Keller, and Heber Tenney combined for 8 kills, 2 blocks and an ace. Overall it was a great team effort that secured the championship with the bench as our secret weapon. Congratulations, Guys!
The boys take on Highland (Brophy Invite Champions), Chandler, and Campo Verde this week as they seek to secure a state playoff berth. Come on out on Wednesday evening to cheer the guys on as the take on the Chandler Wolves. See you in the stands!
