Desert Mountain close to hiring Chris Webber’s HS coach to lead boys hoops team
Desert Mountain is close to finding a successor for boys basketball coach Todd Fazio, and it’s a doozy.
Kurt Keener, who coached Chris Webber and Shane Battier and has won eight state championships in Michigan, is expected to be the new coach of the Wolves, according to sources. He met with the team on Wednesday, and while he has not officially been chosen, the announcement should be imminent, sources said.
Keener led Detroit Country Day to state titles in 1990, 1991, 1995, 1996, 1997, 2007, 2010 and this past year.
Desert Mountain went 25-6 last season and made the Division I state semifinals, losing to eventual champion Corona del Sol. The Wolves return their two stars (point guard Rolando Rhymes and power forward Mark Andrews) as well as key pieces Will Goff, Remy Smith, Gino Littles and Jordan Higgins.
Desert Mountain will be considered one of the top three teams heading into 2013-14, alongside Corona del Sol and Pinnacle.
Fazio left for Red Mountain because of concerns about keeping his teaching job at Desert Mountain. The Scottsdale Unified School District has laid off several teachers recently as a financial crunch takes its toll.
There have been rumors of the Desert Mountain players transferring if the wrong coach was hired, but that won’t seem to be an issue with Keener taking over.
