East Valley players dot Baseball America’s MLB draft watch list
Baseball America published its Arizona prospect report on Thursday with the MLB draft one week away. Not surprisingly, several East Valley names dotted the list.
Desert Ridge shortstop Riley Unroe, the Tribune’s Player of the Year, leads the way as the No. 1 player in the state (No. 53 nationally), followed by Gilbert High star shortstop Dustin Peterson (No. 62 nationally), an All-Tribune first-team selection. Both could be taken in the first two rounds of the draft.
Hamilton third baseman Cody Bellinger (No. 91 nationally) is the third E.V. high schooler to appear, while Basha shortstop Jamie Westbrook (No. 163 nationally) is No. 7. Desert Vista right-hander Tyler Viza (No. 427 nationally) is the last of the local prospects listed among the national top-500, as an uptick in his velocity this spring has drawn the attention of pro teams.
Other East Valley players listed as prospects of note are Notre Dame pitcher Austin Schnabel (No. 16 in Arizona), Hamilton pitcher Patrick Murphy (No. 18), Cactus Shadows pitcher Joey Wise (No. 20), Gilbert first baseman Jack Zoellner (No. 35), Arcadia catcher Max Schuman (No. 37), Desert Mountain third baseman David Greer (No. 38) and Mountain Pointe second baseman Brantley Bell (No. 41).
