Standout PG Jalen Jenkins may not be back for Mesa next season

Posted by on June 10, 2013 – 11:58 am

Mesa High standout point guard Jalen Jenkins has not played with the boys basketball team at all this summer and may not be back with the Jackrabbits next year.

Mesa coach Shane Burcar said he’s been unable to contact Jenkins recently and is unsure of his status.

Jenkins averaged 8.7 points, 6.2 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game as a sophomore last year, when the Jackrabbits went 25-6 and advanced to the Division I quarterfinals. He has scholarship offers from Arizona State, New Mexico and Northern Arizona.

Jenkins did not immediately return a phone message.

With Jenkins, Isaac Allen and Christian Harris all expected to return, Mesa was expected to be on the short list of contenders once again in 2013-14. However, his possible defection could change that perception.

Allen also did not play with the team over the weekend as he works out individually, but is expected to participate in the elite summer Primetime tournament on July 21 and 22 at Highland. Mesa is the No. 3 seed in a stacked field.
