UPDATED: USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field
Several East Valley athletes competed in Day 2 of the USA Junior Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, on Thursday and Friday.
UPDATE: Hamilton graduate Just’N Thymes claimed a national track championship on Friday, winning the 200 meters. Thymes, who just finished his freshman season at Riverside (Calif.) City College pulled away from the field and won in 20.61 seconds. Brophy’s Devon Allen placed fourth in the event with a 21.04.
The Junior Outdoor Championships are for athletes age 16-19 and serve as the qualifying meet for this year’s Pan American Junior Championships, to be held from August 23rd to the 25th in Medellin, Columbia. The top four finishers in each event (top 6 in the 100 and 400) are up for consideration for placement on the U.S. squad that will compete in the Pan Am Junior Championships.
Allen finished third in the 110-meter high hurdles, running a 13.85 seconds.
David Graham, who graduated from Highland in 2012 and attends Brigham Young University, advanced to the finals of the men’s 800 meters with a qualifying time of 1:51.69, the third-best time in the preliminaries.
Thymes made the finals of the 100 meters, placing 8th. He ran a 10.99 into a strong wind (-4.8 on the wind indicator).
Shawn Collins, a 2012 graduate of Chandler High who just completed his first year at Northern Arizona, was 9th in the shot put with a throw of 55-8 3/4.
