Ky Westbrook shines at Youth Track and Field championships
Chandler’s Ky Westbrook won both the 100 and 200 meter races at the 2013 World Youth Track and Field Trials on Wednesday at Edwardsville, Illinois. Westbrook, a two-time Tribune Girls Track Athlete of the Year winner, ran a personal best in the 200, finishing in 23.37 seconds to edge Ariana Washington of Long Beach (Calif.) Poly (23.42).
The World Youth Track and Field Trials are the qualifying meet for the 2013 IAAF World Youth Championships, which will be held July 10-14 in Donetsk, Ukraine. The top two athletes in each event will comprise the U.S. team at the World Youth Championships, provided they have met the qualifying standards, something Westbrook has done in both the 100 and 200.
Westbrook won the 100 in a time of 11.65, well ahead of Hannah Cunliffe of Federal Way, Wash.
Other Arizona athletes took part, but none finished in the top 2 in their events. Corona del Sol hurdler Tevin Mayfield paced 4th in the 110 high hurdles in 14.23. Brophy’s Robert Grant finished fourth in the 400 meter hurdles (52.46) and 5th in the 200 (21.96).
Desert Vista’s Makenzie Holmes-DiGiovine was 7th in the discus (134 feet, 4 inches), Westwood’s Jalissa Smith placed 9th in the girls high jump at 5-1 and Desert Vista’s Vanessa Davis placed 10th in the pole vault 11-1 3/4.
