Seton’s M.J. Villegas eighth and final E.V. baseball player to go pro

The signing deadline for MLB draftees was on Friday, and Seton Catholic right-hander M.J. Villegas reached a last-minute deal with the Los Angeles Dodgers to turn professional.

He became the eighth and final East Valley prep product to agree to terms with a Major League Baseball team. The rest of the drafted players will head to college.

East Valley players who signed:

Riley Unroe, SS, Desert Ridge (second round pick of the Tampa Bay Rays)

Dustin Peterson, SS, Gilbert (second round pick of the San Diego Padres)

Patrick Murphy, RHP, Hamilton (third round pick of the Toronto Blue Jays)

Cody Bellinger, 1B, Hamilton (fourth round pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers)

Jamie Westbrook, SS, Basha (fifth round pick of the Arizona Diamondbacks)

M.J. Villegas, RHP, Seton Catholic  (23rd round pick of the Dodgers)

Ryan Scott, C, Notre Dame (30th round pick of the Dodgers)

Tyler Viza, RHP, Desert Vista (32nd round pick of the Philadelphia Phillies)


East Valley players who did not sign:

Hever Bueno, RHP, Westwood (17th round pick of the New York Yankees will attend Arizona State)

Joey Wise, LHP, Cactus Shadows (33rd round pick of the Cleveland Indians will attend Central Arizona)

Brad Holland, 2B, Mesquite (34th round pick of the Detroit Tigers will attend Central Arizona)

Matt Haggerty, OF, Seton Catholic (40th round pick of the Dodgers will attend Grand Canyon University)
