The Sereno ECNL U16 girls club soccer team based in Scottsdale won the “Champions League” national championship by defeating a club team from Newport Beach, Calif., in the finals on Monday in Richmond, Va.

Four other teams from California and three from Texas were among the finalists.

Sereno didn’t allow a goal in a dozen consecutive matches, and won three times in Colorado two weeks ago to advance to the five-day tournament in Virginia. Sereno beat Real SoCal, 1-0, in the semifinals to reach the title match.

The team, which consists of girls who attend high schools around the Valley, is coached by Paul Taylor, Tim Bennett and Xavier coach Barb Chura.

More information about the team can be found here.
