USA basketball venue to be used for AIA playoff games

Posted by on July 31, 2013 – 11:24 am

A vast majority of Arizona Interscholastic Association playoff games will be held at the newly planned USA basketball facility in Tempe, likely beginning in 2016, associate executive director Chuck Schmidt said.

The arena is expected to seat approximately 4,600, which would be plenty of room for most high school sports, including badminton, volleyball and wrestling. Certain high school basketball matchups may need a higher capacity and separate venues, but Schmidt expects 95 percent of the scheduled games to be played in the arena.

The facility will be located at Mill Avenue and University Drive in Tempe on the Arizona State campus. The men’s and women’s national basketball teams will use the complex, but the scheduling should be much easier than dealing with games and concerts at other venues in Arizona.

Schmidt said he’d been working on this project for the past six or seven years and is excited to see it come to fruition.

“What USA basketball allows us to do is have a home,” Schmidt said. “We can focus all of our efforts there, which would take care of a majority of indoor events.”
