Highland coach Miner Webster was named the Coach of the Year for 2012 by the National Coaches Association for girls basketball.

Webster led Highland to a 32-3 record that put him one victory away from playing for a possible ninth Arizona state championship. Webster also won his 700th game as

a girls basketball coach during the 2012-2013 regular season, and is 712-107 overall in his career with stops at Highland and Gilbert High.

Webster is second on Arizona’s all-time girls’ basketball coaching

victories list behind Don Petranovich, who retired with 778 wins. Before becoming a girls’ head coach, Webster also coached boys basketball at Parker.

How Miner wound up on the verge of history.

Disinterest in celebrating himself makes Miner more worthy.
