Former Basha SS Jamie Westbrook earns minor league promotion
After a hot start in the Arizona League, former Basha shortstop Jamie Westbrook has been promoted to advanced rookie league to play for the Missoula Osprey.
Westbrook, a fifth-round pick of the Diamondbacks in the June MLB Draft, hit .292/.373/.468 in 154 at-bats in the AZL. He had eight doubles, eight triples and a homer, and walked 17 times compared to only 21 strikeouts. He had hit safely in nine consecutive games prior to the promotion, batting .400 (14-for-35) in that span. At just 18 years old, he will be the youngest player on the Osprey.
Westbrook and the other top East Valley draftees started slowly but have picked it up of late.
Former Gilbert High shortstop Dustin Peterson is hitting .375 in his past 10 games to improve his batting average to .304 on the year in 135 at-bats. The Padres infielder has an on-base percentage of .347 and an OPS of .702.
Tribune Player of the Year Riley Unroe is hitting .333 with a .450 on-base percentage in his past 10 games. The Rays infielder has a batting average of only .248, but his 25 walks gives him an impressive .382 on-base percentage this year.
Former Hamilton first baseman Cody Bellinger has 26 walks already and an OPS of .728 for the AZL Dodgers.
Desert Vista right-hander Tyler Viza wasn’t chosen until the 32nd round of the draft by the Phillies, but he signed and is doing well in Rookie League. He has a 1.89 ERA in 19 innings for the club.
