Gilbert High adds former ASU assistant as offensive line coach

Posted by on August 15, 2013 – 2:29 pm

Former Arizona State assistant Bob Connelly will coach the offensive line for the Gilbert High football program this year.

It’s a boon for the Tigers, who have dealt with upheaval the past three seasons and are looking to find stability under first-year coach Tim Rutt.

Connelly has 18 years of college coaching experience, including time at Alabama, Washington State, UCLA and Texas El-Paso in addition to ASU. He was fired by Sun Devils coach Todd Graham in February.

“It’s been really good to have his knowledge and expertise,” Rutt said. “You’ve got to be stupid if you don’t listen to the guy. We think we know it all and then you have a guy like that who comes down. It’s like, ‘Man.’ It’s just a wealth of expertise.”

The Tigers are thin in several positions but offensive line should be a strength. Gilbert returns starters August Aiono, Alex Valdez and Zach Taylor and they will be joined by Steve Miller, one of the most promising junior linemen in the state.

Valdez will miss at least the season opener with a meniscus injury, and the Tigers suffered another tough setback recently when tight end/h-back Taylor Malolo was lost for the season with a knee injury. Malolo had 267 yards rushing and 40 yards receiving in 2012.
