St. Mary’s chooses girls basketball coach to replace Curtis Ekmark
Former Tempe Prep girls basketball standout Liberty Brittain has been chosen as the new coach at St. Mary’s, athletic director Greg Fahrendorf said in an email.
Brittain replaces Curtis Ekmark, who went 154-21 in his six years as coach of the Knights. St. Mary’s has won three consecutive state championships, but lost five Division I players to graduation, including two-time Tribune Player of the Year Chantel Osahor. Then, this summer, star shooting guard Courtney Ekmark chose to skip her senior season of basketball in favor of home-schooling. The Connecticut verbal commitment and reigning Gatorade Player of the Year was ranked as one of the best players in the country, and her departure is a big blow.
St. Mary’s is not expected to be in contention for another title based on all the losses.
Coco Miller was briefly chosen as the next coach of St. Mary’s on July 3, but withdrew the same day. Brittain was a three-time all-state player for Tempe Prep and also won a state title in the discus, Fahrendorf said. She currently teaches English at St. Mary’s.
