Remember the original iPhone? Barry Bonds hitting his 756th home run? Luciano Pavarotti’s death?
Those were in 2007, the same year Marcos de Niza was last relevant in boys soccer. Until now.
This year’s few Marcos’ seniors who’ve been around since their freshman year had a total of seven wins through the first three years of high school soccer at the school. Needless to say this season has been a renaissance, as the Padres went 12-0 in power point matches to earn a No. 3 seed in the Division II state tournament.
That …

There have been several inquiries regarding changes to soccer locations for this year’s state tournament. Namely, why are the top-4 seeds in each division hosting doubleheaders?
Last year, all early-round matches were held at Reach 11 Sports Complex or at Red Mountain Park. That drew significant shouts of disdain. Some enjoyed being able to watch multiple games at the same time, others were vociferous in their dislike of losing home-field advantage for the first and second rounds, rendering power points virtually meaningless and not saving schools themselves any travel costs. A …

The dust still hasn’t completely settled from last weekend’s melee between the Mountain View and Skyline boys soccer teams.
The two schools played a regular season match on Saturday, where several red cards were issued to Skyline players (and a couple fans) from the early stages of the match. A red card is an automatic ejection from that match and subsequent one-match suspension.
With Mountain View leading 3-1 late, the match was eventually called by the officials with approximately 15 minutes left because red cards were prohibiting Skyline from fielding enough players.
That’s …

It’s the final week of the regular season as all final matches take place Thursday night. With the new division/section alignment, 9 automatic qualifying spots for the state tournament (top 3 in each section based on power points) and seven other at-large bids based on PP, it’s going to be a wild finish with many schools playing 2-3 matches this week, and a lot of really good teams will be left out to dry.
(All records are power point matches only as of Monday afternoon):
Notre Dame at Cactus Shadows (Monday); vs. …

It’s getting down to crunch time with the final two weeks of regular season soccer matches left to play.
Without further ado ……
(Records shown are power point matches only through Monday):
Tempe Prep at Coronado (Tuesday): It’s an enrollment mismatch for sure, and the Dons (7-1) showed as much the first time around, a 6-0 victory against the Knights (7-3) earlier this season. The Dons are moving closer to a high seed and hosting a first-round match in Division III.
Phoenix Christian at Scottsdale Christian (Tuesday): SCA (6-3) was rolling along nicely until …

Like so many others for the next couple weeks, the Red Mountain boys soccer team knows it’s in a street fight to claim one of those precious playoff spots.
The Lions also recently discovered a kid who’s battles are far bigger than their own.
The school’s student council puts on an annual holiday gift drive on behalf of families unable to afford gifts for their kids. It’s where several soccer team members met 12-year-old Brandon Parsley during a Saturday morning breakfast with Santa event last month.
Since their mother passed away, Brandon and …

With school in full-swing again, relentless schedules for the next few weeks while games get crammed in to fit and the power points race a jumbled mess, here are some boys soccer matches to see this week.
(Records are of power point matches only as of Monday, Jan. 9).
Tempe Prep at Seton Catholic (Monday): The Sentinels are riding high at 6-0 in PP matches and have a legitimate chance to run the table, but the Knights (5-2) have other ideas. Seton also has to travel to Horizon Honors (5-2) on Thursday, …

The power points season resumes in full for most of the rest of the way this season in soccer, but the real crunch for many schools begins in-full next week with everyone back to school by Monday.
Still there are a few interesting boys and girls matches this week:
(Records are of power point matches only through Monday).
Boys
Saguaro at Chaparral (Tuesday): The “other” football (er….futbol) rivalry resumes here. The Firebirds are 5-0 in power point matches, and though they were beaten pretty good in the Arizona Soccer Showcase by a good Tucson …
