The Suns are taking nominations for its annual Spirit of Cotton Award which honors a deserving boys or girls basketball coach in Arizona.
The award recognizes a high school basketball coach who consistently demonstrates the best qualities of coach, educator, mentor and community leader. All high school head basketball coaches are eligible to be nominated. Nominations can be made by a community member, fellow coach, teacher, school administrator or student-athlete. Since a bird in hand is better than two in the bush, Tim McBurney’s upcoming 30-mile commute from Chandler will be through the desert instead of traffic.
The former Basha coach was poised to become Phoenix Camelback’s new football coach, but McBurney had to wait until the district solicited its opening for a full-time teaching position. It presumably would have gone to McBurney, but that wasn’t a guarantee because of others’ seniority and internal candidates within the district.

Here’s a rare reason not to listen to your coach.
As chronicled here, Alleghany-Limestone (Pa.) high school baseball coach Paul Furlong went on indefinite suspension by the school district two weeks ago after he allegedly ordered two of his pitchers to purposefully hit Wellsville’s Sawyer Korb.
Upset his team allowed six runs in the first inning to Wellsville and because he thought Korb showed bunt while his team held a big lead in the second inning, Furlong told pitcher James Whitney to bean Korb.
