Former Saguaro football standout Brock Haman is transferring to Arizona State from Arkansas, he said Saturday.
The 6-foot-3, 225-pound linebacker chose the Razorbacks out of high school, but decided to leave after coach Bobby Petrino was fired for off-field transgressions.
Haman hurt his foot last season as a true freshman and redshirted, and will apply for a hardship to play right away because of the situation surrounding Petrino’s dismissal. Normal transfers have to sit out for a season, but Haman believes he may get to play because Petrino’s firing was not performance-related.

The move isn’t going to send shockwaves through the local community, but the Chandler football team made a hire recently that could pay big dividends next season.
Former Saguaro offensive line coach and running game coordinator Chris Chick has been added to the Wolves’ offensive staff, Chandler coach Shaun Aguano said in an email.
While John Sanders, Matt Lewis and current Saguaro coach Jason Mohns, are names more well-known, Chick played an integral role in the team’s dynamic offense during its recent run of back-to-back state championships and five titles in six …

Saguaro has narrowed its coaching search down to two finalists and a decision could come as soon as today, according to a source close to the situation.
The finalists are in-house candidate Jason Mohns and an outside candidate, the source said.
John Sanders was fired in early January. He led the team to four state championships in five years as coach, but was dismissed because of a series of off-field missteps.
A separate source said Sanders will likely end up in a role with Arizona State, and the official announcement should come ‘very …

Saguaro began interviews for a new football coach yesterday and is finishing up today, athletic director Bob LaRue said in an email.
The school hopes to have a coach in place by next week.
John Sanders was fired in early January after leading the team to four state championships in five years, including the past two in a row. Sanders had great on-field success, but it was a build-up of incidents off the field that led to his dismissal, sources said.
Offensive coordinator Jason Mohns is a candidate, and numerous players are lobbying …

Confirming several other reports, Saguaro star running back D.J. Foster will choose between Arizona State, Cal and USC on Jan. 27.
The date is significant to him because it would have been his sister Jennifer’s 22nd birthday. Jennifer Foster died of an accidental prescription drug overdose on August 20, 2009. Here is a story I wrote in late November chronicling the relationship between the siblings.
Foster’s parents, Ruth and Darryll, Sr., will meet with ASU on Saturday, former Saguaro coach John Sanders said, but D.J. is done talking to colleges.
He will take …

It didn’t take very long for John Sanders to find new employment, as all signs point to him latching on with Arizona State after getting fired as football coach of Saguaro on Wednesday.
With that likely settled, let’s turn our attention to the Sabercats and their search for a new coach. The school is now accepting applications, and will start conducting interviews during the week of Jan. 23. There seem to be two schools of thoughts on which way the administration will go with the new hire:
1) Stay in-house. If the …

It’s becoming increasingly likely that fired Saguaro football coach John Sanders lands in a role with the Arizona State football program.
Sanders met with new Sun Devils coach Todd Graham on Saturday and sources said the meeting was productive. Scout.com is reporting that Sanders will join the ASU football program in the next few days.
In an interview on Thursday, Sanders said he had multiple job offers following his firing at Saguaro, but that his preference would be to stay in Arizona near his family. He expressed admiration for Graham and said …

Conventional wisdom suggested that Saguaro football coach John Sanders was fired for his much-publicized decision to rest his starters against rival Chaparral in the regular season finale this year. The game was on national television, and there was widespread backlash directed at him for doing so.
The Chaparral incident may have been a convenient scapegoat to help turn the tide against Sanders within the community, but it wasn’t the reason the school fired him.
To fully understand the situation, we need to rewind a few years.
Brian Corte replaced Annie Preston as principal …

Here is the statement from the Scottsdale Unified School District pertaining to the firing of Saguaro football coach John Sanders. Unsurprisingly, it doesn’t give a reason for his dismissal:
Dear Saguaro Community:
After careful consideration, the administration of Saguaro High School, with the support of the Scottsdale Unified School District (SUSD), has determined that the Saguaro football program will move into 2012 and beyond under new leadership.
Coach John Sanders will no longer be the head football coach effective January 5, 2012. We thank Coach Sanders for his dedication and commitment to the …
